The Idea

A new space for art and creative synergies is taking shape in the middle of the historic industrial district of Schöneweide in Berlin.

The new façade of the Schauhallen will envelop the 19th century Reinbeckhallen. The new space both preserves the charm of early Berlin industrial architecture and opens it up for contemporary and flexible uses.

Openness and Communication

Openness and communication characterize the Schauhallen. A “factory of the future” is being developed where current developments in international art can be reflected on and communicated in new ways. The direct contact between museums, galleries, and collections will encourage unusual ideas and make unexpected fusions possible. A key element of the project is its interdisciplinary approach and it will equally incorporate business and media partners. Talk shows covering exciting questions about contemporary art in the Schauhallen’s  “brainstorming base” will take place alongside political debates and aesthetic explorations.

The creation of a living urban space

With the Schauhallen, art attempts conversion. The old industrial area of Schöneweide will be reinterpreted; the attractive surroundings on the banks of the river Spree will be enhanced and developed. The image of industrial decay will, in the long term, be transformed.

The Schauhallen will make Schöneweide a unique meeting place for the international art community.
